Legendary Indian Cricketer MS Dhoni, who holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, visited the troops deployed in the Kashmir Valley from November 21-28, 2017. The visit was organised by the Territorial Army Directorate with a view to boost the morale of the troops deployed in inhospitable terrain and operating in an extremely challenging Counter Insurgency/ Counter Terrorism environment.
Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) MS Dhoni visited various Regular Army and Territorial Army units in the area of Srinagar, Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri and Awantipora. During his visit to the units he spent maximum time with the troops and participated in various activities along with them including firing, patrolling and even spent a night with troops at a sentry post. He also interacted with GOC, 15 Corps and various other senior Army officers at these places. He was the Chief Guest during the Chinar Premier League Cricket match at Bandipur, wherein he interacted with the budding young local cricketers. The cricket tournament was organised by the Indian Army as yet another step in nurturing the talent of the Kashmir Valley youth. The event provided the local youth a once in life time opportunity to meet the legendary cricketer and derive inspiration. Similar interactions with local youth were organised at other locations also.
Donning Army battle fatigues with maroon beret, Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) MS Dhoni also visited Army Public School in Srinagar and Army Goodwill Schools at Uri and Khanabal. He interacted with the students and emphasized on the importance of education and sports.
Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) MS Dhoni was granted honorary commission in Territorial Army in Sep 2011 and since then he has been regularly involved in various activities with the Army including visits to forward posts of the Indian Army. His current visit has provided a great opportunity to the youth of Kashmir as well as the troops to interact with the cricketing legend and derive inspiration and positive energy as also enhanced the positive image of Indian Army.
