The President Mrs Pratibha Devisingh Patil awarded Ashok Chakra to Hav Rajesh Kumar of 11th Battalion, Rajputana Rifles (posthumous) on the eve of Republic Day. She also conferred Ashok Chakra to Maj Mohit Sharma (posthumous) and Maj D Sreeram Kumar. These two were awarded Ashok Chakra on the eve of Independence Day last year.
Hav Rajesh Kumar, on August 1 last year, was leading a section of Ghatak team in the dense forest in Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir. The team was subject to intense and indiscriminate firing by terrorists. Hav Rajesh Kumar returned the fire and scrambled into the undergrowth to outflank the terrorist. With dogged determination, he closed in around the flank and killed the terrorist. While continuing the search, the team was again engaged by two terrorists positioned upslope.
Realising the danger to the lives of his teammates, Hav Rajesh Kumar moved to outflank one of the terrorists through a veritable hail of bullets. While closing in, he sustained gun-shot wounds in the abdomen. Disregarding gun-shot wounds, he shot and killed the second terrorist. Bleeding profusely, he moved to outflank the third terrorist from his blind side and engaged him in fierce hand-to-hand combat, killing the terrorist with the burst of fire, before succumbing to his injuries.
Maj D Sreeram Kumar of 39 Assam Rifles, on 23 Oct 2008 at 1730 hours, after obtaining explicit intelligence regarding presence of 10-15 armed terrorists in a village in Imphal East district of Manipur. Maj D Sreeram Kumar launched operations to eliminate/apprehend the terrorists. On being challenged, the terrorists opened indiscriminate heavy automatic fire and pinned down the section under him. Assessing the situation, the officer engaged the terrorists with accurate fire and killed two terrorists on the spot.
In the ensuing fierce encounter, Maj D Sreeram Kumar continued moving towards the remaining well-entrenched terrorists. On seeing two more terrorists firing from a dugout channel, Maj D Sreeram Kumar with utter disregard to his own safety dashed down and closed in crawling and killed both the terrorists.
Maj D Sreeram Kumar displayed inspiring leadership, most conspicuous gallantry under lethal hostile fire and single-handedly eliminated four terrorists.
