The golden jubilee of the Fifth Battalion (KANCHI) of Fourth Gorkha Rifles was organised at Gandhinagar. The Battalion, right after its raising, saw action in the India-Pakistan war in 1965 in the Sialkot sector and was awarded the Theatre Honour 'Sialkot Punjab 1965'. Besides the India-Pakistan war, the unit has served in NEFA and has been part of various operations. It has the distinction of being amongst the first infantry units to receive the 'COAS Citation' in 1992 for sustained good performance and successful action against infiltrators and terrorists in J&K. The 'Eastern Command Unit Citation' in February 2008 is another feather on its cap.
A total of 200 veterans of the Battalion from Nepal and various parts of India participated in the three-day event. The event was flagged off by a Special Sainik Sammelan by Major General PS Paul, Colonel of the Regiment of Fourth Gorkha Rifles. A Special Day Cover by Army Postal Service was released to commemorate the historic event.
Veer Naris of the Battalion were felicitated for the supreme sacrifice made by their husbands while safeguarding the territorial integrity of the nation. The event infused new enthusiasm and increased the bonhomie amongst the soldiers of the Battalion, motivating them to work harder and excel in all fields.
