Torgya Festival

The three day long Monastic festival of Monpa tribe of Tawang was celebrated at the Tawang Monastery. The festival starts from twenty eighth day of eleventh lunar month. This year it was celebrated from 20- 22 Jan 2023. Torgya festival is celebrated by the Monpa tribe of the Tawang Monastery to pay homage to Lama Tsongkhapa and chase away evil spirits that ushers in diseases, misfortunes and natural calamities. The highlights of the festival is the Chham dance wearing outfit of warrior Arpu by the Lamas of the Monastery. The colourful three days festival becomes more alluring when Lamas dance wearing different costumes and masks. While doing so they perform on some soulful music with drums and cymbals. The Indian Army on the gracious invitation from the Gyalsy Rinpochey of Tawang Monastery participated in the event. The bonhomie between the civil administration, Monastery administration and Army was evident. The function was graced by local MLA and other civil dignitaries of Tawang. The Indian Army donated gifts and clothing items to the Monastery and reaffirmed their commitment towards the protection of the Indian borders and own people. The locals of Tawang in reciprocation reaffirmed of their unconditional support to the Indian Army.
